Alcoholism and drug addiction centres in Newfoundland
There are no private residential centres for the treatment of alcoholism, drug addiction, gambling addiction or sex addiction in Newfoundland. Ledgehill Treatment and Recovery Centre in Nova Scotia is the closest private residential treatment centre for most Newfoundland residents, and is easy to reach.
For those Newfoundland residents who are unable to access an addiction treatment program in a private centre such as Ledgehill, there are some government services which may be of interest. The Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Health and Community Services maintains an Addiction Services web page detailing the services provided through the four regional health authorities – Eastern Health, Central Health, Western Health and Labrador-Grenfell Health.
There is a heavy emphasis on community-based support for those suffering from addiction, including outpatient counselling, early intervention and outreach for youth, adolescent day treatment, detoxification services, an opioid treatment centre and crisis support.
Additionally, short-term adult residential treatment is available through the Humberwood Treatment Centre located in Corner Brook and operated by Western Health. This offers a three week inpatient program for individuals who must be referred to the program by an addictions counsellor.
