For two days, Ledgehill’s alumni gathered to reinforce their journey in recovery. It is incredibly gratifying for everyone at Ledgehill to see how well our previous clients are doing. Although there are many trials and tribulations through life, it was evident at this workshop that a fullness and passion for life is being realized.
The Moving Beyond Recovery workshop saw a tremendous amount of good work from all participants. The dancing, the laughter, the sharing, the personal support offered to each other and to clients currently in treatment, was wonderful to see.
The education about all aspects of recovery and the raising of consciousness allows continued openings to life’s potential.
In the words of David Butterworth “Don’t go through life, grow through life.”

Charles and Pauline attended the Issues of Substance Conference held in Halifax, 15-18 November 2009.
The Conference was well attended with 540+ social workers, addiction counsellors, nurses and other professionals with an interest in the treatment of substance abuse. Most of the participants in the conference were representing various government departments, with a few private service providers. Ledgehill was the only such provider from Eastern Canada, with others coming from BC.
The three keynote speakers were Annette Dale-Perera from England, who is the Strategic Director of Addiction and Offender Care for Central North West London, Dr. Franco Vaccarion of Neuroscience who talked about what is happening in Addiction and Mental Health Research, and Chris Kennedy Lawford, son of the actor Peter Lawford.
The conference was time well spent for Charles and Pauline, providing an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas with other professionals in the field.

Paula reports on a successful day spent with clients learning new skills to support recovery from addiction
On Tuesday October 8th we were off site with our clients attending an all day workshop that addressed the necessity for overall health, proper diet, and fitness. The objective of the workshop was to educate individuals on the technique of balancing the number of calories your body needs to function efficiently and your activity level.
It was a great introduction to the relatively new Canada’s Food Guide and how to use it and adjust it to your activity level and nutritional requirements.
The program showed us how to use different foods to increase our energy levels and when we should be using carbohydrates and proteins to optimize our performance whether during work, school, or recreational activities. It looked at healthy options of weight management and had a very beneficial introduction to appropriate and safe use of vitamins and dietary supplements.
For individuals overcoming issues around addiction, and searching for healthy balance in their lives, this workshop introduced the basics of health and nutrition in a user-friendly manner. There was something for everyone. It encouraged the clients to look at their nutritional practices of the past and focus on what needs to change to work towards optimal health and nutrition.
We were very pleased with the positive reaction from the clients and the new goals that it generated.

On September 24, Charles and Pauline attended a day-long session at the Human Resource Association of Nova Scotia, in Halifax. There were approximately 50 booths including Ledgehill.
We were very pleased to be able to meet so many HR professionals from all over Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, and also to meet EAP (Employee Assistance Program) providers such as Shappell FGI, Human Solutions, and Blue Cross.
All-in-all an excellent day, so a big ‘thank you’ to all the people we met; we hope to help your employees and clients with their problems in the near future.

We attended the Wing Welcome at Greenwood, Annapolis County Nova Scotia today. I think I can speak for everyone there to say it was a huge success. We met lots of people from the base including the Wing Commander, Colonel Seymore and the Wing Chief Jim Jardine.
We had an opportunity to explain our program, and express our interest in having a strong community partnership. We had a lot of individuals that work in health services in the community and on the base, who were very curious about our facility and wanted to learn more.
It felt good to share our mission and our facility with others and to experience the interest and support.
